Recent Event Report - Woodcock Outing - Apr. 17
- May 17-19, 2008: Grand Manan Weekend:
Jim Brown is our trip leader. This outing is focused on birding and socializing. The warblers arrive on Grand Manan at this time.
We arrive on Friday evening or, on Saturday morning, on Grand Manan on the ferry from Blacks Harbor. The cost for the ferry last year was:
- Passengers adults $10.50
- children $ 5.20
- Vehicles excluding driver $31.40
We stay in Fisherman's Haven in Ingallis Head. We did make a reservation for 3 cottages. Each cottage has two bedrooms with double bed, a kitchen, a living room and bathroom. The cost for a cottage is 90.00 per night plus tax.
We bring food for breakfast, lunch and supper with us. Each evening we have together a potluck supper.
You need a binocular, rain clothing and hiking boots. We go mostly around with car and hiking. The hiking parts are not difficult.
If you are interested in this event, please let Wilma know.
Changes in the planning of the Grand Manan trip May 17- May 20, 2008
The owner of Fisherman's haven was able to rent his cottages to a construction company. We were able to make a reservation for three cottages in Sea Haven motel. This motel is also located in Ingalis Head and the lay out is similar. The phone number is 1-506-662-3377. The cost for one cottage per night is $75.00.
I had to give my Visa number as warranty. The consequence is that when you sign up for the trip and you cancel, there is a cost for you.
The last chance to sign up is on the meeting at April 26.
- Wed. May, 21 2008: Orland's Trail, Smiths Creek area
This outing is about wild flowers. Gart is our trip leader. You will need boots, repellent and a binoculars.
We leave at 7.00 pm from the back parking lot of Cow Town Tim's.
- May 26, 2008: Regular meeting at St. Paul's United Church in Sussex, New Brunswick at 7:30 pm .
Nelson Poirier, Woodpeckers... Their Life and TimesOne of the very interesting sectors of our wildlife community in New Brunswick is the woodpecker troop. The woodpeckers play a very important role in Mother Nature's plan.
We will not only spend a few moments on the identification of our seven woodpecker species native to New Brunswick but get familiar with a few non-indigenous woodpeckers that occasionally drop by, investigate some of the special adaptations woodpeckers have to make them unique, and learn more on their individual vocalizations, drummings, preferred habitats, and with audience participation, no doubt lots more.
Join us for a session devoted to woodpecker-ology with Nelson Poirier on Monday night May 26 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Church Hall and be ready to fly with the woodpeckers this summer.
- Tuesday, May 27, 2008: Trillium Walk, Cotter's Hollow.
There are already some trilliums flowering. In Cotter Hollow there are many wild flowers and ferns growing. The walk is easy and takes roughly two hours. Jim Proctor is the trip leader, he knows this area very well.
Take boots, repellent, field guide of wild flowers and binoculars with you. We leave at 7.00 pm from the back parking lot of Cow Towns Tim s.
- Saturday, May 31, 2008: Water Fowl Outing, Jemseg area.
The marsh duck trip was postponed due the high water level and the road closures and shall have a different character. Probably a lot of duck species have left for their breeding grounds in the north, but the warblers and other species are taking their place. (On this day the Moncton club also has their outing.)
This trip is mainly by car and walking. Jim Brown is the trip leader. We have our socializing at Mamma George's in Spring Field or Holiday Restaurant in Cambridge Narrow at 4.00 pm. In order to make a reservation, please contact me at 433-5437 or at our new E-mail address warisz@rogers.com.
Take a lunch, binoculars, telescope, bird book and boots with you. We leave at 9.00 am from the back parking lot of Cow Town Tim s. The trip takes the whole day.
