Botanical Web Site Launch

With the assistance of the Wildlife Trust Fund and the UNB Biology Department a botanical web site of interest to New Brunswick naturalists has been launched by the Connell Memorial Herbarium at UNB Fredericton - www.unb.ca/herbarium

The primary focus of the web site is to make more accessible to the public, the data from the 55,000+ dried plant specimens currently housed in the Connell Memorial Herbarium at UNB. The collection includes almost all 1644 plant species found in New Brunswick as well as plants from around the globe. The Connell Memorial Herbarium is the oldest extant institutional herbarium in Canada and has specimens dating back to the 1830's. Currently, approximately 7000 records, all from New Brunswick, are available for searching.

Also included on the web site are:
  1. An introduction to the herbarium and herbarium practices
  2. Reference maps of New Brunswick
  3. An intriguing history of plant collecting in New Brunswick by C.M. Young
  4. A guide to plant collecting techniques and ethics
  5. Links to other sites of interest to New Brunswick naturalists
